The MGE – electric MGF project
by Neil Hutchinson - EPCC
This project was to take a standard and widely available British sports car and convert it to an all-electric drive. Part of the purpose was to provide a test resource for the development and testing of a number of new products suited to European conversions.
It was important to retain the MG look and feel and create a desirable vehicle that is practical and useable and still looks and drives like the original car.
The first phase of the project was to entirely renovate the vehicle and then fit the AC motor and inverter. The 3-phase water-cooled moter is interfaced with the original gearbox and managed by a 100KW water-cooled inverter. A 300v nominal set of Li-ion batteries was installed.
Road tests have shown that the car is exactly as designed, quick and agile, feeling like the original (but quieter), with an estimated range of 80 miles, top speed of 80 mph + and very respectable acceleration.
The MGF is based in Dorset, UK and is in fact the first registered electric vehicle in Dorset.
